Car hammocks are an increasingly popular way to transport pets in the car. They offer dogs a comfortable and safe place to lie down and keep the car free of hair and muddy paws. But are car hammocks really safe for dogs?
The short answer is yes, car hammocks are generally safe for dogs as long as they are installed and used properly. When used properly, car hammocks provide a safe and comfortable environment for your pet while driving. They also keep the car clean and free of hair and mud.
However, there are some potential safety issues to consider when using a car hammock. For example, if the hammock is not secured properly, it could become a hazard if your pet moves around too much while the car is in motion. Also, some car hammocks are not designed to support the weight of a large or heavy dog, so it is important to check the manufacturer’s guidelines before purchase.
As for comfort, car hammocks can provide a comfortable place for your pet to rest. However, it is important to make sure that the hammock is the right size for your pet. If the hammock is too small, your pet may feel uncomfortable or even get injured. In addition, some car hammocks are not designed to provide adequate ventilation, so it is important to make sure your pet has access to fresh air.
Overall, car hammocks are generally safe for dogs, as long as they are used correctly and the right size is chosen for the animal. It is important to read the instructions carefully and check the manufacturer’s guidelines before purchasing. Also, make sure the animal has access to fresh air and is not in a position where it could injure itself. With the right precautions, car hammocks can be a great way to keep your pet safe and comfortable while on the road.
Are Car Hammocks Safe for Dogs?
As pet parents, we want the best for our tailed family members. We want them to be safe and comfortable, especially when we’re on the road. One popular option for keeping our dogs secure while driving is using a dog car seat cover. But is it actually safe for our beloved pets?
In this article, we’ll discuss the safety concerns that every pet parent should consider before purchasing a dog rear seat cover. We’ll also cover the essential installation and care issues. So buckle up, and let’s hit the road to explore the world of car hammocks for dogs!
1 What Is a Dog Car Seat Hammock and Do I Need One?
Picture this: you’ve just gone on a road trip with your four-legged best friend and you’re both having a great time together. But then your pet starts trying to jump into the front seat, distracting you from driving. Then you make a stop and see that the entire back seat is stained with hair and dirty paws… And you also wanted to let your dog swim in the lake! How will your car look then?!
This is where a dog car seat cover comes in. It is a specially designed seat cover that attaches to your seat headrests, creating a hammock-like barrier between your pet and your car seats. Not only does it protect your car interior against hair, stains, and scratches, but also keeps your doggie comfy and restrained. So it’s the ultimate solution for dog owners who want to keep their cars looking clean while keeping their pets safe.
Do you need a dog seat cover for your car and your dog? That mostly depends on the behavior of your pup while you’re on the road. We definitely recommend buying a dog rear seat cover in the following cases:
- if your dog leaves a lot of hair on car seats
- if your pet is very active and constantly distracts you from driving
- if your dog spends a lot of time outside and stains your car interior with dirty paws and hair
- if your dog scratches the upholstery and car doors
- if you have a puppy or a newly adopted dog who is not yet accustomed to traveling by car
- if you want to extend the life of your upholstery and keep your car looking new
So if you’re looking for a smart solution to take care of both your doggie and your car on your next road trip, a dog car seat cover might be just what you need.
If you’re looking for full protection of your car’s interior, we recommend looking into the four-sided type of hammocks. They protect the seats, the floor, and your car doors as well. For example, the Owleys active dog car seat cover even has hard sidewalls. Get a passenger seat dog cover with a similar four-sided design if you want to keep your car looking brand new for as long as possible.

How to Keep Your Dog Safe in the Car
Hitting the road with your dog? Make sure they’re safe with this helpful advice.

Your pet wants you to read our newsletter. (Then give them a treat.)
Whether you’re going on a long road trip or just running a few errands, bringing your dog along for the ride automatically makes the trip more fun. But when you’re driving with your dog, it’s important to make sure they’re strapped in safely (just like any family member).
But, you might be surprised to learn that some of the pet restraints sold to ensure your dog’s safety don’t actually do what they are intended to do — and many are not adequately tested. “Many pet restraint products do not perform well in crash tests, but these products are unregulated because pet products are not considered consumer products. That means that promises on the packaging and in ads are not to be trusted,” says animal behaviorist Karen B. London PhD.
The non-profit Center for Pet Safety was founded to properly test car restraints for dogs. Very few pet restraints passed the center’s independent crash certification test, and some styles (including ziplines) can be downright dangerous.
So, what options do you have to keep your dog safe? First, if possible, put your dog in the back passenger seat. The back seat is the safest place for your pup because crumple zones, which are often likened to crushing a soda can, absorb the impact in the front and cargo areas. Meaning in a serious accident, your best bet is to keep your pet restrained in the back seat.
Next, the safest choice is a doggy seat belt or harness (a regular seat belt won’t fit them). With the right dog car harness, you can keep any size dog safely strapped in the back of your car. This should also keep them from distracting you while driving or from hanging their head out the window. Dogs love to feel the breeze through their fur, but it’s actually pretty dangerous — they could be struck by a tree branch or even jump out of the car.
Dog harnesses aren’t your only option, though. Keep reading to learn more ways to secure your dog in the car, plus get six dog car safety tips.

Good for: Small and large dogs
How to secure your dog:
Slide the car seat belt through the dog seat-belt loop and buckle your dog in.
Place your dog on the car seat and connect the silver clasp to your dog’s harness.

8 Expert Tips for Comfortable Hammock Camping
Recreational hammocks are fast becoming “must-haves” for Scouting campouts, and many are small and light enough that folks bring them on day hikes, as well. Some of the primary reasons people like hammocks are because they are fun, comfortable to lounge in and pretty quick to set up. Whether you’re a veteran “hanger” or just starting out, here are eight tips to make the most of your hammock.
1. HANG YOUR HAMMOCK WITH A GOOD SAG
Too many people attempt to string up a hammock as tightly as possible between anchor points. This can cause a cocooning effect that can squeeze your shoulders and bow your back uncomfortably. Instead, try hanging your hammock with a good sag, as in a smiley face. If you really want to geek out, a good starting angle is 30-degrees from horizontal. This is the most important tip to make your hammock more comfortable. A deep sag also lowers the center of gravity, making the hammock more stable and harder to fall out of.
2. LAY DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE HAMMOCK
Once you’ve got a good sag (see tip No. 1), you can lay diagonally across the fabric. You’ll be amazed at how comfortable this will feel as your head and feet drop down and your body reclines ergonomically flat across the fabric. This is how hammocks were designed to work.
3. RAISE YOUR FOOT END HIGHER
In some cases, your body may naturally slide to the middle of your hammock, which can sometimes be uncomfortable. To prevent any sliding, try hanging the foot side of the hammock about 8 to 10 inches higher. This helps keep your heavier torso from sliding into the middle.
4. TRY A KNEE PILLOW
Depending on the size of your hammock (and how tall you are), you may feel a tight ridge under your legs when lying diagonally. This can cause hyper-extension on your knees. Ouch! To relieve this pressure, place some padding under your knees. Extra clothes or a small pillow would work great. (Remember: Longer, not wider, hammocks are generally more comfortable, allowing you to lie diagonally without leg hyperextension.)
5. USE A BUG NET
While some jungle hammocks come with sewn-on bug netting, simple recreational hammocks do not. No one enjoys bugs buzzing around your face, especially if those bugs bite. A full-length bug net can completely surround your hammock and create a roomy pod to read, rest and relax.
6. USE A SLEEPING PAD OR UNDER QUILT
A lot of folks think all you need is a sleeping bag to stay warm in a hammock. After all, you’re off the ground, so you don’t need a pad for comfort. What that pad does help with, however, is warmth. You’ll compress the sleeping bag insulation under your body in a hammock just like you would on the ground, so you’ll feel cold in a hammock without some uncompressed insulation beneath you. To keep the sleeping pad from slipping out from under you, try putting it inside your sleeping bag.
7. USE A DRIP LINE
On really rainy days, water can seep down your suspension and get your hammock wet. To prevent this, tie a drip line on your suspension, positioned under your tarp (you are using a tarp, right?). See illustration for more details.
8. FOLD YOUR HAMMOCK INTO A CHAIR
Sitting in a hammock can feel like a deep bucket seat. This can be comfy, but if you want a chair that doesn’t cut the circulation off your knees and lets you sit up squarely, take the edge of the fabric and fold it toward the center of the hammock. Sit down on this doubled-over area for a nice, flat seat.

HAMMOCK SAFETY
Hammock camping can be a fun alternative to using a tent. Stay safe by following these safety guidelines, suggested by the BSA Health and Safety team:
- To prevent dangerous falls, hang your hammock no more than 3 feet off the ground.
- Do not hang your hammock over water features, chasms in the ground, or above tables or sharp objects.
- Do not participate in hammock stacking, in which multiple hammocks are stacked vertically.
- Just like a tent, do not keep food in your hammock.
Author Derek Hansen is an Arizona Scoutmaster and hammock-camping enthusiast who first used a hammock at age 14 at the BSA’s Beaver High Adventure Base in Utah. He’s the author of The Ultimate Hang: An Illustrated Guide To Hammock Camping (2011) and the website, The Ultimate Hang.
Hammocks are good for dogs: a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of hammocks.
For many dog owners, the idea of giving their furry friend the perfect bed is a priority. While there are many disponib ili options, such as traditional dog beds, heated beds, and even couches, more and more pet owners are starting to consider hammocks as a viable option. But are hammocks good for dogs
The answer to this question is not a simple yes or no. While hammocks may offer some benefits to dogs, there are also some disadvantages to consider. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of dog hammocks.
Pros: One of the biggest advantages of dog hammocks is that they can provide a comfortable and supportive resting surface for your pup. Hammocks are usually made of a sturdy, breathable material, which can help keep your pup cool and comfortable. They are also easy to clean and maintain, making them a great choice for pet owners who want an easy-care option.
Cons: One potential drawback of dog hammocks is that they may not offer enough support for larger breeds. Also, some dogs may have difficulty getting in and out of a hammock, especially if they have mobility issues.
Ultimately, whether a hammock is a good choice for your puppy will depend on his size, activity level and sleeping habits. If your puppy is small in size, is relatively inactive and prefers to sleep in one spot, a hammock may be a good option. If, on the other hand, your puppy is larger, more active and tends to move around a lot during sleep, a traditional bed or couch may be a better choice.
Regardless of the type of bed you choose for your puppy, the most important thing is that it is comfortable and supportive. If you take the time to find the right option for your puppy, you can rest assured that he or she will sleep soundly.
7 Tips for Hammock Camping with Man’s Best Friend
What You Need to Know to Make Your Next Hammock Camping Adventure with Your Dog a Success
As a dog lover, you’ve probably taken your dog on camping trips before. But as a hammock camper, it’s a bit more challenging to bring along your furry companion especially if you’re not sure they’ll like it.
Whether you’ve mastered hammock camping or you’re trying it out for the first time this fall, there’s always room for your canine friend. Many campers have never considered sleeping with a dog in a hammock, but it is certainly possible (unless you have a Great Dane or St. Bernard, sorry!).
This guide will help you answer common questions like If I go hammock camping with a dog, where does he sleep? With these tips on how to prepare, things to look out for, and ways to keep your dog snuggly in your hammock with you, you will have everything you need to make your next hammock camping trip with your dog a success.
Tip 1: Find a Dog-Friendly Campsite
You don’t want to risk a hefty fine for bringing your dog to a campsite where dogs are not allowed. The first step to planning your trip is to do your research before choosing a hammock camping spot.
You’ll also want to choose a spot to hang your hammock that is safe for your dog. Hang your hammock over level ground that isn’t near any slopes, cliffs, or sharp rocks. A safe camping spot will reduce the risk of your dog getting injured while jumping in and out of the hammock.
If you plan to let your dog off their leash during the day, consider using a tracker collar in case your dog takes off in the woods.
Advice: Even if your dog is welcome, dogs may not be allowed off their leashes. Be sure to double check with the campsite before you arrive.
Tip 2: The Dog Pack – What to Bring
Ensure your dog has everything it needs throughout your hammock camping trip with this checklist.
Don’t forget to pack:
- More dog food than you would generally need;
- Water and food bowls;
- Clean drinking water (if not accessible at your campsite);
- A leash or two;
- Medications;
- Treats;
- Dog-safe tick and bug repellant;
- Dog-safe sunscreen;
- A nightlight for their collar (good for nighttime visibility of your dog);
- Biodegradable poop bags;
- Extra towels and blankets;
- Favourite toys or balls, including Frisbees for running around;
- A light raincoat;
- A doggie first aid book and kit, including tick tweezers/keys, vet wraps, Benadryl, super glue, and styptic pencils.
Tip 3: Where Will My Dog Sleep? (Answer: In Your Hammock!)
Obviously, the bigger your dog, the bigger your hammock needs to be. The best hammock for camping with your dog is one that is big enough for both of you to fit in comfortably. As one of the best hammocks for durability and comfort, you and your dog will be comfy and cozy in a Brazilian-style hammock.
DISCOVER OUR FEATURED PRODUCT: DELUXE BRAZILIAN-STYLE DOUBLE HAMMOCK
See if your dog is comfortable with sleeping in a hammock by practicing at home first. Hang your hammock in your backyard or a park and test things out with your dog before your trip.
When your dog sees how relaxed and happy you are in your hammock, they will likely just want to be with you. Remember to be patient and give your dog time to sniff and check things out on their own. Your dog might jump in quickly, or they might not. They may even need a hand getting in and out the first few times.
Advice: If you’re hammock camping with a big dog, your dog is better off sleeping closer to your feet. But if your dog is smaller, they can sleep near your chest or closer to your head.
If your dog doesn’t take to the hammock at home, there is still hope that they will when you’re camping. In case your dog doesn’t want to snuggle in your hammock, bring a tarp and a camping quilt so they’ll have a comfortable bed to sleep on. Also, make sure the dog bed is set up under your rain fly so your dog and its bed can stay dry if it rains.
Tip 4: How to Get Comfy
Follow these tips on how to keep you and your dog warm and comfortable while camping (especially during the colder season):
Towels
Whether your dog sleeps in your hammock or on their own bed, make sure they are towelled off and dry. If they are wet when they go to bed, they will make you, your bedding, or their bedding wet, which will make you both uncomfortably cold overnight.
Advice: Consider wiping your dog with biodegradable wet wipes to clean them off before getting into your hammock. This will keep you both as dry and clean as possible during the trip.
Tarps
A tarp or rain fly is essential to keeping you both dry and sheltered from the elements. If your dog decides to sleep on the ground, make sure they stay dry by using placing a tarp underneath their blanket.
Blankets or Sleeping Bags
If your dog prefers sleeping on the ground, pad their bed with blankets and consider using a small sleeping bag that will keep them warm overnight.
Top Quilt
A top quilt on your hammock will cover both you and your dog, keeping you both warm and cozy in your hammock.
You can DIY an easy top quilt yourself!
Hang Your Hammock Lower
Hanging your hammock slightly lower than usual will make it easier for your dog to get in and out of your hammock with ease.
Plan for Entry with a Mosquito Net
If your hammock has a handy built-in mosquito net , you’ll have to practice letting your dog in and out of the hammock with these enclosures.
CAUTION: Your dog’s nails can easily rip and tear through your nylon hammock. If your worried about potential damage, opt for a Brazilian-style hammock and attach a separate mosquito net instead.
Tip 5: Avoid Disaster by Clipping Their Nails
Don’t forget to clip your dog’s nails before you head out on your hammock camping trip. Camping hammocks are made of lightweight nylon material, so sharp claws could damage your hammock.
Another option, especially if it’s cold, snowy, or rocky, is to give your dog booties to wear. These will keep your dog’s feet warm and safe from injury while protecting your hammock from potential damage.
As counter-intuitive as this may seem, consider having your dog groomed before your camping trip. A clean, shorter coat will make it easier to spot and remove pesky (and potentially dangerous) ticks and burrs.
Tip 6: Keep Them Close, Keep Them Safe
To avoid issues with wildlife or other campers, always keep your dog close to you while out in the woods.
Use your dog leashed at night to keep them close. The last thing you want is for your dog to chase after a critter or be sprayed by a skunk.
You can hold your dog’s leash in your hand if they are sleeping in your hammock with you or tie a long lead to a nearby tree or your hammock’s ridgeline.
Tip 7: Use ID Tags
Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, and check that their ID tags contain valid information before you go camping.
You may also wish to include your campsite information, so people will know where to return your dog if it gets lost.
If you’re a dog lover who wants to bring your furry companion with you everywhere you go, hammock camping is no exception. Your dog can cuddle with you and keep you warm, while also guarding you against woodland critters. Make your next hammock camping experience even better by bringing your K9 companion with you for the adventure.

The main advantage of using a hammock for leopard geckos is that it gives them a comfortable place to rest and relax. Hammocks are soft and cozy and can provide a sense of safety and security for leopard geckos. In addition, hammocks can help create a more natural environment for leopard geckos, which are commonly found in trees and other elevated areas in the wild.
On the other hand, the use of hammocks for leopard geckos has some potential disadvantages. For example, they can be difficult to clean and maintain. Also, they can be somewhat expensive and may not last as long as other types of bedding. Finally, some leopard geckos may not find hammocks comfortable or attractive, so it is important to watch your pet carefully and make sure he or she is happy and comfortable when using a hammock.
Overall, hammocks can be a good choice for leopard geckos, as long as you take into account their specific needs and preferences. They can offer leopard geckos a comfortable and safe place to rest and relax, and they can also help create a more natural environment for them. However, it is important to keep in mind that hammocks can be difficult to clean and maintain and may not be the best choice for all leopard geckos.
Swell Premium Reptile Hammock
The Swell Reptiles Premium Hammock is a brilliant addition to any terrarium or vivarium. The soft nylon mesh hammock is a tough bit of material that easily attaches to the glass or plastic walls of your enclosure to create a platform, the perfect living space for reptile basking and relaxation. This premium hammock is made from a nylon material that is easy to clean and durable.
Why should I buy this premium reptile hammock?
Hammocks are a great place to sunbathe and bask for reptiles such as Crested Geckos. They are also a fantastic place for pets to unwind if they feel uncomfortable on the floor of their enclosure, which is a common problem for many arboreal species like Chameleons. Hammocks create multiple levels within an enclosure and will encourage climbing behaviours.
Which Premium Reptile Hammock should I buy?
Our hammocks are divided by size. We recommend trying to find a hammock that is a little bigger than your reptile to give them plenty of space to move around and get comfortable. If you are looking for a hammock for a Leopard Gecko we recommend the small hammocks over the extra small hammocks.
Is this reptile hammock suitable for Bearded Dragons?
This reptile hammock is not suitable to hold a fully grown Bearded Dragon, however, it can be used to give juvenile Bearded Dragons a safe basking spot or as a treat-filled shelf for your Bearded Dragon to practice climbing. Smaller reptiles like a Leopard Gecko will find plenty of space in the hammock.
Does this reptile hammock include a soft nylon mesh and suction cups?
Yes, this reptile hammock is made from soft and easy to clean nylon and attaches to the walls of your enclosure via a series of large suction cups. The combination of large suction cups and soft nylon make set up and maintenance easy.
Are there any other reptile hammocks I can buy?
Yes, we stock a variety of reptile hammocks, including our own natural woven hammock which blends well into natural decor seamlessly. Both the natural and premium hammocks are frequently bought together to create more living space within a terrarium.
Hammocks are useful for sleeping
Hammocks have been around for centuries and are often considered a symbol of relaxation and recreation. The answer is yes, hammocks can be a great option for sleeping, depending on preference.
Hammocks offer a level of comfort and support that can be difficult to find in other sleeping options. They are designed to distribute body weight evenly, and the hammock’s curved shape helps keep the spine aligned. This can reduce tension in the neck, back and other areas of the body, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Hammocks are also great for people who tend to get hot during sleep. The open, airy design of a hammock allows air to circulate, keeping it cool and comfortable. This is especially useful in warmer climates and during the summer months.
Hammocks can also help reduce stress and anxiety. The rocking motion of a hammock can help cradle a state of relaxation, and the sensation of being suspended in the air can help create a sense of weightlessness. This can be especially helpful for people who have trouble sleeping due to stress or anxiety.
Of course, not everyone likes hammocks. Some people find them too uncomfortable or too difficult to get in and out of. Others may find them too cold in the winter months. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If you think a hammock might be a good option for you, it is worth a try.
5 reasons for sleeping in a quality hammock
For many years Brazilians have traditionally slept almost exclusively in a hammock and have no bed at all. This way of sleeping is, at least in South America, very common. Thus tested a million times and found to be good. There are many reasons why you should definitely try sleeping in a high-quality hammock:
You will fall asleep faster!
- Swinging in the hammock leads to a faster fall asleep, sometimes the sleep is even deeper, since sleep-related brain wave oscillations are strengthened, Swiss brain researchers from the University of Geneva found out
You will sleep more calmly!
- You can only turn back and forth in the hammock to a limited extent. When you are lying in bed, pressure points are created at night in various areas due to your weight. You try to relieve these to tension by moving. This is not necessary in a hammock because it adapts to the shape of your body.
Your back pain can get better!
- Back pain can be alleviated with the right lying technique. The right hammock adapts to you and your sleeping position.
You will sweat less and experience a pleasant climate!
- Especially on hot summer nights you will find a place in a hammock that is well ventilated from all sides. This is how you can regulate your personal temperature
You are spared from house dust mites!
- In hammocks house dust mites have no breeding ground, hammocks are unreachable for mites and other crawling friends
And now just try it out. Off to the hammock. We are happy about feedback.
Hammocks are good for you A look at the benefits of ditching

Hammocks can also be helpful for sleep. When you lie in a hammock, your body is in a comfortable position that can help you relax and fall asleep. The rocking motion can also help lull you into a deep sleep.
Hammocks are also great for outdoor activities. Whether camping, hiking or just enjoying the backyard, a hammock can provide a comfortable place to rest and relax. They are also lightweight and portable, so you can easily take them with you on your next outdoor adventure.
Finally, hammocks are a great way to stay in touch with nature. When you lie in a hammock, you can admire the beauty of your surroundings and enjoy the feeling of being close to nature.
In conclusion, hammocks can be a great addition to your home or outdoor activities. Not only are they comfortable and relaxing, but they also offer a number of health benefits. If you are looking for a way to relax and unwind, consider investing in a hammock.

The Difference Between Sleeping in a Hammock and Sleeping in a Bed
The main difference between sleeping in a hammock and in your bed is the sleeping position- and this is important for your back health.
If you have ever slept in a hammock, you will understand why hammock is perfect. A hammock will enclose you, rock you, and take the pressure off your lower back. This gentle swaying and rocking, in turn, engages your vestibular system.
The human vestibular system is responsible for the adrenaline rush we get when we ride a roller coaster. It is also the reason why the subtle rocking of a child puts them to sleep.
Simply put, a hammock is incredibly relaxing!
A hammock will help you achieve a longer, restful, and deeper sleep.

Are Hammocks Bad For Your Back And Spine?
If your hammock is appropriately set up, then no! When you sleep in a hammock that is not bad for your back! It is good, actually! In fact, tossing and turning while you sleep is effectively eliminated with the way a hammock holds you. This is why it is safe for your back.
Some people think that a hammock will cause back pain, and this is not true. That discomfort we sometimes feel during a night’s rest (waking with sore, stiff limbs and backs) is as a result of turning and tossing in our sleep.
Sleeping in a hammock means you are forced to sleep on your back, which will help reduce pressure on your spine, making it super-comfortable, especially if you have pre-existing back pain.
Please note, if you have special nerve issues or spinal problems, do not sleep in a hammock. Consult your doctor to determine if sleeping in a hammock is a good fit for you.
Sleeping In a Hammock
If you read our article on “Hanging a Hammock Indoors,” you will realize that hammocks are not meant for outdoor use only. They can be hanged indoors. Hammocks had been used as sleeping beds by sailors in old ships and now are more favored than beds in South America!
Many Brazilian hammocks can be hung inside your home in several ways. If you are hanging your hammock outside this summer, you should include a mosquito net as part of your hammock setup. There is nothing worse than a mosquito buzz in your ear after drifting to sleep.
Sleeping in a hammock is comfortable and easy. Just grab a blanket to keep warm, and you are good to go.
What Are the Benefits of Sleeping in a Hammock?
Sleeping in a hammock is beneficial, and to enjoy these benefits, you don’t need to throw away your conventional beds. You can lounge in your hammock occasionally and still reap these benefits.
Hammocks should be installed with a mosquito net when setting up outside to enjoy sunrise or sunset. You can even install the hammock beside your bed, it’s that easy!
1. A Hammock Will Help You Achieve the Ideal Sleeping Position
Sleeping in a hammock entails moving into an ideal sleeping position; it cocoons you, keeping you there. This way, if functions a lot like a memory bed. Your hammock will not allow you to toss to either side, won’t let you sleep on your stomach, which can actually hurt your back.
Additionally, this position will keep your head adequately elevated, which is the ideal position for a restful night.
2. Helps You Fall Asleep Faster
A study has shown that hammock helps induce sleep. This could be because you are lying in a comfortable sleeping position.
Another reason could be the swaying, which lures you into a peaceful, restful, relaxed state. If you regularly toss and turn in your sleep and you are getting frustrated with the accompanying sore, stiff limbs and backs; sleeping in a hammock could just be what you need.
3. Hammock Help You Sleep Deeper
Apart from sleeping faster, hammock also helps you to sleep deeper. Sleeping in a hammock will help you achieve REM sleep, the deepest form of sleep. If you have a sleep disorder, it can take a while for you to fall into a deep sleep.
Deeper sleep helps improve your focus, lessens anxiety, and increases your memory. Also, deep sleep is positively correlated with improved work performance and a better mood.

4. Zero-pressure Point Rest
What does it mean?
A hammock is a zero-pressure point system because there are no contact points between the sleep surface and your body.
When you sleep on the ground, for instance, your body will be forced to conform to the surface. The reverse is the case when sleeping in a hammock; it conforms to your body instead. This way, there will be equal pressure throughout your whole body, eliminating the pressure in specific areas only.
5. Swaying in a Hammock Helps Your Brain
Swaying is a soothing action for most people. This explains why babies fall asleep when rocked back and forth. Swaying impacts the brain wave, which triggers rest and helps you fall asleep faster.
Swaying will also help you relax and unwind even if you are not sleeping, making it possible to relax after the hustle of the day.
Conclusion
Hammocks are not bad for your back.
They help improve sleep in many ways, without the need to altogether ditch your bed. They provide additional sleeping options instead and help you fall asleep faster.
If you have sleeping problems, or back pain, consider sleeping in a hammock. It is incredibly beneficial to your sleep and back health.
Why Sleeping In A Hammock Is Good For You
exactly that, examining the link between personality traits and various sleep positions. For example, workaholic businessmen and entrepreneurs are apparently more likely to sleep on their backs (which, you’ll also learn, is called the royal position). Sleep on your stomach? You, along with the author and Madonna, are likely very persistent and goal-oriented with some strong compulsive tendencies. As with any study that attempts to tell you things about your personality, you’re either going to find the results spot-on or completely disagree – but what really caught my eye was this:
Many doctors say it’s lying on one’s back, with the head slightly elevated, about 10 – 30 percent. This is postulated to give the brain optimal blood circulation rather than congestion and also allows for more un-obstructed breathing, says Dr. Steven Park, a head and neck surgeon and member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. You see many native cultures sleeping this way, via hammock and other devices, rather than on flat surfaces as in the West.
Sleeping in a hammock rocks (pun not intended but I’m keeping it nonetheless). It’s peaceful, relaxing and it feels great both when you fall asleep and when you wake up. Keep in mind though that not every hammock is going to be comfortable to spend the night in, so if you’re going to try it for the first time make sure you have a hammock that is designed with a full night’s sleep in mind. You shouldn’t have to worry about falling out of it in the middle of the night (Trek Light Hammocks have a No-Flip™ design) and you don’t want to wake up with a permanent rope tattoo from sleeping on knots or string (silky smooth parachute nylon is where it’s at!).
It seems that the health benefits of hammocks are just beginning to be studied in depth and we’re really just scratching the surface. From the medical hammocks used in premature baby therapy to their application in the treatment of arthritis, acid reflux, sleep apnea, autism or simply to reduce stress and provide a healthier night sleep, it’s exciting to see science catching up with what native cultures (and hammock lovers across the world) have known for centuries. The zero-pressure point ergonomics and the ability to slightly elevate your upper body are the keys to a healthy sleep that no flat surface or mattress can truly provide.
It doesn’t mean you need to replace your bed with a hammock (although many of our customers have actually done just that). But, if you’ve got a place at home to hang a hammock, I challenge you to think of it as more than just a place to spend a few minutes when you need to relax. Forget about those bad experiences you had falling asleep in rope hammocks and waking up with a waffle pattern on your face or a pain in your back. Get a quality hammock, learn how to sleep in it properly and take your next nap in it or try spending a full night in it if you never have before. The health benefits of hammocks is a topic we’ll continue to explore in detail on the Trek Life blog and I hope you find it as fascinating as we do.
Let us know in the comments if you’ve already spent a full night in a Trek Light Hammock or any other hammock and if not, I encourage you to give it a try and let us know how it went! On a side note, if you’ve got the ability to hang a hammock in your home and you’re interested in trying a hammock sleep experiment and blogging about it, please get in touch – I’d love to feature your experience on the blog.
UPDATES: Since we first published this post there have been a lot more stories on hammock health in the news. It’s extremely encouraging to see that the more hammocks get put under the microscope so to speak the more we keep learning about how incredibly healthy the hammock experience is. Here are some links to more great articles and hammock sleep studies – we’ll continue to update this page as more studies come out:
Check out our Hammock Health page for lots more on the health benefits of hammocks, and of course don’t forget to read our Sleeping In A Hammock Guide for the information you need to know to sleep in a hammock comfortably, whether for a short nap or as a full-time bed.

5 Easy steps to the Perfect Hammock Camping Trip with Your Dog
Does your pup love the great outdoors? Bring them along on your next hammock camping adventure and enjoy the freedom of sleeping between the trees together! With our 5 steps to the perfect hammock camping adventure with your dog, you can ensure that both of you have an amazing time.
Is your dog ready for hammock camping?
When you’re exploring nature with your pup, make sure to brush up on their obedience training. Some useful commands are sit, stay, down and leave it – all of which will come in handy if they don’t have a great recall! With these tools at the ready, both you and Fido can enjoy an adventure safely.
If you’re staying at a dog-friendly campsite, around other people, your dog should be able to relax in the hammock without being triggered by things happening around them. Being outside in a hammock with more visibility over their surroundings may cause them to bark.
Practice
Dog’s aren’t naturally skilled at jumping into and out of hammocks, so you’ll need to do some practice at home.
Get your pup ready for hammock time! Start by laying the hammock on flat surface and let them explore. Then, hang it nice and low to make getting in easy – invite your dog over while you’re relaxed inside. Give your pup lots of love while slowly encouraging them how to get in themselves until they can do so without any help from you. After a few good repetitions, they’ll be an expert at chillin’ like you do! Who knows – maybe one day YOU will end up joining your pooch!
Keep in mind that, if you have a large dog, they may prefer to sleep close by instead of inside the hammock with you, so don’t force them if they look as though they don’t want to sleep in your hammock.
Packing list
While not all of these items may be required depending on the weather and conditions, this is what you should be packing for hammock camping trips with your dog:
- Water and food
- Portable bowls
- Poop bags
- Dog-specific first aid kit
- Treats
- Hammock + accessories
- A spare hammock
- Dog bed / sleeping bag
- Leash
- Harness
- Dog-safe bug repellent
- A light for their collar
- Towels
- Toys
- Sweater / jacket
Make the experience comfortable
Because dogs aren’t naturally accustomed to getting in and out of a hammock (some people aren’t, either!) it can help to hang the hammock lower than you normally would so they can get in and out easier.
While a hammock on its own may be fine on some trips, there are additional items you can bring to make the experience more comfortable. They are:
- Towels – You don’t want a wet, dirty dog sleeping in your hammock.
- Blankets – A blanket can provide a more grippy surface in your hammock, protect it from your dog’s nails and give them a place to sleep on the floor if they decide the hammock isn’t for them.
- Tarp – A tarp provides shelter from the rain and, if your dog decides to sleep on the ground, use a tarp under their bed to make sure they stay dry.
- Sleeping bag – Like a blanket, a sleeping bag provides warmth, protection and somewhere to sleep on the ground if your dog wants to be there instead of the hammock.
- Top quilt – A top quilt is just a duvet designed for hammocks, providing extra warmth on cold nights. You often don’t need a top quilt in addition to a sleeping bag, unless it’s very cold.
- Underquilt – An underquilt provides a layer of insulation below the hammock to reduce heat loss, making it a great addition to cold weather hammock camping.
- Mosquito net – If bugs are a concern, get a mosquito net for your hammock to protect you and your dog from being bitten.
Have a plan B
Although it looks super cosy, hammock camping with your four-legged friend may not be their cup of tea! If they prefer the feeling of solid ground to snooze on – no problemo. Bringing a blanket or dog sleeping bag will give your dog other sleeping options if they decide hammock camping isn’t for them. Tethering your dog to make sure they are secure and under control during the night may also be a good idea.
Choose the right hammock
Even if your pup may not take up much room, we suggest bringing a double hammock along for more space. Not to mention you’ll be thankful for the extra area – especially if your dog is a restless sleeper! Don’t worry about adding too much weight either; most hammocks barely weigh anything at all.

Dog Hammocking Tips: Hang With Your Favorite Pup!
It was one of those perfect November days. Not warm, not cold, just a perfect 70 degrees in North Carolina. There was a slight breeze, just enough to release the amber and red leaves from the tress, but not enough to feel windy.
We had arrived at the campsite the day before, and I was exhausted. Not from the drive, the traffic, or anything else, just exhausted from life. My husband’s father had just passed away, and my desk job had hit a boiling point.
So that morning I couldn’t decide what to do; we were surrounded by mountain biking trails, a beautiful lake, hiking trails – the possibilities were endless. Noticing two trees in our campsite, I made the type of decision I don’t normally make – to do nothing! I sent my husband off to bike and stayed behind with Riley and Kona. As I set up my hammock, Kona was unusually wiggly. I thought for sure she was going to give me a hard time about not taking her for a run, but she didn’t. As I got into the hammock, Kona came right over, threw her 2 front paws up, and I hoisted over her back legs. She immediately fell asleep. Riley then positioned himself on the ground in front of us, his ears up and alert in true shepherd fashion.
We lay in the hammock all afternoon; I alternated between watching the leaves fall through the air, sleeping and reading. The campground had emptied out and it was completely silent. With one dog at my feet and the other curled up with me I felt the weight of the world leave my tired body. The gentle sway of the hammock and the soft sound of the leaves hitting the ground were restorative.
For the rest of our trip, I had tons of energy to bike, paddle, and hike. I felt light – my stress was gone. I think my dogs knew that I needed a day of relaxation in nature. They aren’t normally so content to lay around, but that day they were. Since then both dogs have taken a bigger interest in the hammock, especially Kona. Now when I set it up she can’t wait to hop in with me.
Allowing my dogs to hang in the hammock with me is just one more thing we can enjoy together. But they weren’t always so comfortable in them, so like all our joint activities we did some training. Here are some tips for safely introducing a dog to a hammock:

Dog hammocks come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials, so it’s easy to find one that fits your pup’s needs. Also make sure the material is durable and able to withstand the elements. Look for a hammock made of a waterproof material that will not tear or fade in the sun.
Another important factor to consider when choosing a dog hammock is safety features. Look for a hammock with a secure buckle or clip that will keep your pup safe inside. Also make sure the hammock has a solid, sturdy frame that will not collapse or break when your pup jumps in and out of it.
Finally, consider the style of the dog hammock. If you are looking for a hammock that looks good in your yard or patio, look for one with a stylish pattern or design. If you are looking for a hammock that will provide added comfort and security for your pup, look for one with a soft, padded material.

Five dogs enjoy a relaxing day on their hammocks
On a beautiful summer gio rn, five dogs found the perfect way to relax and enjoy the sunshine. They each climbed into their hammocks and soon let the breeze wash over them. The dogs were quite content as they relaxed in their hammocks, enjoying the sights and sounds of the day.
The hammocks were located in a grassy area of the yard, surrounded by trees and bushes. The dogs could see birds flying in the sky and squirrels scampering in the trees. The sun shone brightly and the air was filled with the sweet scent of flowers.
The five dogs were of different breeds and sizes, but they all seemed to be having fun. Some were dozing, others were playing with each other or looking around. They were all so happy and peaceful, it was a beautiful sight to see.
The hammocks were a great way for the dogs to relax and enjoy the summer atmosphere. They were so comfortable that some of them even fell asleep in the hammocks. It was a nice way to spend the day and reminded us how important it is to take time for ourselves and relax.

Yes, a hammock is good for your back
A hammock is a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors, but did you know that it can also be good for your back? Yes, it’s true! A hammock can provide the support your back needs to stay healthy and strong.
When you lie in a hammock, your body is suspended in a way that takes the strain off your spine. This allows your muscles to relax, reducing tension and strain on your back. In addition, hammocks are usually made of breathable material, which allows your body to stay cool and comfortable.
The gentle rocking of the hammock is also good for the back. This gentle movement helps relax tense muscles and improve circulation. This can help reduce back pain and stiffness.
Finally, hammocks are usually very comfortable, so you can get a good night’s sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is very important for your back health. When you get enough sleep, your body has time to rest and recover, which can help reduce back pain and stiffness.
Overall, a hammock is a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors while taking care of your back health. So if you are looking for a way to relax and reduce back pain, a hammock may be the perfect solution for you.
Are Hammocks Good for Your Back? – Health Benefits
Almost 80% of adults will have back pain at some point during their life. Age, pregnancy, weight, and genetics can all play a factor, but this type of health issue can ultimately affect anyone.
Hunching over a laptop for long periods of time increases the risk of experiencing a stiff and aching back. Although many people do not initially notice poor posture, it can frequently disturb sleep. That begs the question: are hammocks good for your back?
Whether back pain is due to job-related injuries, stress, or poor sleeping, spinal or muscular pain in the back can greatly impact one’s quality of life. Hammocks are one way to alleviate pain without the use of medication potentially.
Back Pain and Insomnia
Back pain can affect sleep in a number of different ways. Those who experience muscle soreness frequently toss and turn, causing a restless night with little sleep. Even if a comfortable position is found, this new posture may not be in alignment with a healthy spine. Although taking medication is a viable option, side effects can also influence the quality and quantity of sleep.
Insomnia is a likely outcome of back pain. A lack of sleep can cause drowsiness, irritability, and even depression. Even experiencing only a few days without quality sleep can have consequences to one’s health and life. For optimal physical and emotional health, a good night’s sleep is key.
Finding the answer to back pain can be difficult. While exercise and medication may not be efficient, hammocks can help alleviate pain and correct poor posture from sleeping in problematic positions.
Are Hammocks Good for Your Back?
Are hammocks good for your back? In short: yes. When pressure is eased off the joints, stiffness and sore muscles have a chance to rest. Hammocks provide the perfect relief from arthritis and inflammation in the back.
Since there are no contact points between a mattress or hard surface and the back, there is less pressure forced upon the spine. Hammocks allow for the back to ease into an aligned position that may otherwise feel foreign or uncomfortable. Once equal pressure is distributed throughout the entire body, spinal posture is much easier to correct.
Hammock back pain is extremely rare. The ideal sleeping position requires lying flat on one’s back. Since this position is not comfortable for many people already suffering from back pain, hammocks play a crucial role in easing the spine. Because hammocks provide a natural posture for soothing backs, insomnia is much less likely to occur.
Back Alignment
Lying on one’s back is the best sleeping position for a healthy posture. This position helps back pain by allowing the body to rest naturally. Unfortunately, back sleeping does not come naturally for most people. Although using the right type of pillow can help, switching positions is often subconscious and easy to do when there is any discomfort during sleep.
The Positives to Back Sleeping
Back sleeping can do wonders for health. Neck pain, acid reflux, and shoulder pain have all been reduced by correct sleeping posture. By putting less pressure on the internal organs, weight and comfort can be distributed evenly throughout the body.
The Negatives of Back Sleeping
Back sleeping can often feel uncomfortable. Many people prefer to sleep on their side or stomach even if it may cause more overall pain. It is possible to learn how to sleep in a different position, but it can take time and practice that may provide little initial sleep.
Hammocks can help with back sleeping. Since there are no pressure points, back sleeping can feel like floating. Once there is no more pain associated with sleeping in the correct spinal position, back pain can disappear within a matter of days.
Hammock Safety
Some people may feel an initial adjustment when sleeping on their back, but hammock back pain is rare. Regardless if a hammock is strung from two trees or with a base that can be used indoors, hammocks are durable and safe for an entire night’s sleep.

Hammocks: An overview of the materials used to build them
Hammocks are a great way to relax outdoors and can be found in backyards and parks around the world. But what are hammocks made of It turns out that different materials are used to build them, depending on the style and desired function.
Cotton is the most commonly used material for making hammocks. It is lightweight, breathable and comfortable, making it a great choice for relaxing. Cotton hammocks are generally weatherproof and can withstand a moderate amount of moisture. However, they are not as durable as other materials, so they may need to be replaced more frequently.
Nylon is another widely used material for making hammocks. It is stronger than cotton, so it can last longer and withstand more wear and tear. It is also more water resistant and can withstand harsher weather conditions. However, it is not as breathable as cotton, so it may not be as comfortable to use.
Hemp is another material commonly used to make hammocks. It is strong and durable, as well as highly absorbent, making it ideal for outdoor use. It is also environmentally friendly and sustainable, making it an excellent choice for those looking for an eco-friendly option.
Polyester is another material used to make hammocks. It is lightweight and breathable, making it comfortable to use. It is also very water-resistant, so it can withstand the harshest weather conditions. However, it is not as durable as other materials, so it may need to be replaced more frequently.
Finally, synthetic materials such as polypropylene and acrylic are also used to make hammocks. These materials are lightweight, durable, and water-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor use. However, they are not as breathable as other materials, so they may not be as comfortable to use.
Regardless of the material you choose, hammocks are a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors. With so many materials to choose from, you are sure to find the perfect hammock for your needs.
Hammock Materials
When it comes to choosing a hammock it can be confusing at times with all the different materials on offer. So what is the difference and what might be most suitable for you?
In Brief
We currently have a range of material options available which include;
- Cotton – for when comfort is your highest priority. Soft and supportive, cotton will conform to your body shape resulting in a very comfortable hammock. Protection from the elements when not in use is recommended to enhance longevity.
- Polyester – very thick, soft cord, extremely comfortable and supportive. Quicker drying than cotton and excellent weather resistance for all summer outdoor use. Available in black or white only.
- Nylon – firmer feel, slightly stronger, quicker drying and more durable than cotton (soon to be discontinued in favour of more weather resistant polyester material).
To see the material each hammock is made from, look for the ‘material’ tab within the main product description.
In Detail
Cotton
Cotton is the staple material of the hammock market. It has many great properties that make it one of the most popular materials for making hammocks. The main features of cotton as a hammock material are;
- Comfort: Cotton is soft, supportive and very comfortable. It has a nice amount of ‘give’ to it. Cotton is always our first recommendation when comfort is your main priority.
- Breathable: Cotton is a breathable fabric so allows for better airflow and reduces the likelihood of getting uncomfortably hot and sweaty in your hammock.
- Absorbs Moisture: Cotton is good for absorbing and wicking away moisture.
- Washable: Cotton can easily be washed should the need arise. Soaking in a large bucket of water and rinsing is the best method.
Being made from a natural material cotton hammocks should be sheltered from the elements where possible when not in use, such as not being left outdoors for long periods of time, especially in direct sunlight and rain.
Our cotton hammocks come in standard thin Mexican cord (double/queen/king sizes) and also ‘thick cord’ size options. Thick cord is made from cotton cord that is approx 4x thicker than the standard Mexican hammock cord providing greater durability and robustness – a great option for families with children.
Polyester
Polyester is a well-regarded weather resistant material making it a great option for Mexican hammocks. In thicker than standard cord it is the hammock material of choice for when you want to leave your hammock outdoors all summer. Polyester is quicker drying than comparable thick cord cotton and has greater mould and mildew resistance. The thick cords do still soak up water so if you are expecting a heavy downpour, popping inside until it clears will save waiting for your hammock to dry before its next use.
You may image polyester cord as waxy or harsh feeling, but that is not the case. Our polyester is very soft and comfortable and feels and looks a lot like cotton.
Come winter or for extended periods of non-use, or rain by bringing inside or placing undercover this will further increase the longevity of this hammock.
Currently only available in thicker corded hammocks being our chair, spreader bar and thick cord hammocks and in bright white or black colour. Polyester is initially very bright white but will dull down some with outdoor exposure.
Nylon
Nylon hammocks come somewhere in-between standard cotton and polyester in terms of weather resistance and durability. They are also very comfortable but have a slightly firmer feel with less ‘give’ than cotton does. They have a silky feeling and beautiful vibrant colours. They are better for more constant outdoor use and are quicker drying than cotton. They are still not recommended for full-time outdoor exposure and by protecting from the elements when not in use longevity will be greately increased..
Material Care
Whatever the material you choose for your hammock, a well cared for hammock will last for many years.
While hammocks are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, it is always the prolonged exposure to UV, wind and rain that cause the most wear on your hammock. As such it can be a good idea to protect your hammock from the elements when not in use. This could include using a hammock cover, hanging undercover or just popping inside until your next use.
Further care information can be found through our hammock instructions, use and care guide .
